At The Fifth Estate, we often spend months on our investigations. That’s how long it takes to meticulously research, interview and produce the documentaries that enlighten, provoke debate and have an impact. In January, Steven D’Souza and his team tracked down an alleged human smuggler who is wanted in connection with the deaths of a family who froze to death at the Manitoba-U.S. border in January 2022. Last week, there was an arrest in Chicago in connection with that case. A U.S. Homeland Security affidavit supporting the arrest warrant read: “The smuggling event leading to these deaths has received considerable international attention within the news media as highlighted in an episode of a docuseries by … The Fifth Estate.” In our investigation into the high cost of food with APTN Investigates, a farmer and an independent food manufacturer tell us that the record profits aren’t trickling down. Our reporting prompted questions in the House of Commons on Monday and at a parliamentary committee meeting on Tuesday. Brian Mulroney, is being remembered for his remarkable political legacy as Canada’s 18th prime minister. But after he left office, he was involved in a corruption scandal - details of which were uncovered by The Fifth Estate. Mulroney threatened to sue CBC after learning we planned to broadcast Swiss bank records. He did not pursue the lawsuit in the end. In 2015, The Fifth Estate and PBS Frontline investigated allegations of criminal activity surrounding Russian President Vladimir Putin. As his most prominent critic, Alexei Navalny, who died in an arctic penal colony, was laid to rest today, we are revisiting Gillian Findlay’s continually relevant reporting. You can watch that episode on CBC-TV or CBC GEM at 9 p.m. or stream it on YouTube right now. Raj Ahluwalia, senior producer Allya Davidson, executive producer |
