TOP NEWS

Susan Ormiston is CBC’s first-ever International Climate Correspondent

This summer, CBC News took a bold and forward-thinking step in creating the role of International Climate Correspondent. The decision acknowledges climate change as a central news issue worthy of dedicated funding and resources. Moreover, having a journalist as accomplished as Susan Ormiston to take on the role further demonstrates the CBC’s commitment to high-quality reporting on the environmental topics that matter most to Canadians. It’s exciting to note that a Climate Producer will soon be hired to support Susan too.

This is the kind of institutional change we love to see!

Road to the Olympic Games saves 78 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over two years

The inability to fly CBC Sports commentators into Toronto during the COVID-19 lockdown posed a major challenge: how could voiceovers get recorded if no one was allowed to travel or be in the studio? The solution was to record remotely. Voiceover booths were set up in CBC offices across the country in spring 2020, allowing commentators to record at their nearest location. In total 168 flights were avoided, which prevented 78 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions from being released into the atmosphere!

How can you incorporate environmentalism into your role? There may be more opportunities than you think, so always be on the lookout to conserve resources and find efficiencies.

ECO TIP

If it’s not in use, turn it off

From laptops and lights to screens and switchboards, we all work with equipment that doesn’t need to run 24/7. Be mindful of the energy consumption around you and, whenever safe and appropriate, power it down. Here are a few tricks you can use to save energy depending on the tech:

  • Use a power bar to easily turn a group of electronics off at once
  • Unplug electronics to prevent phantom power loss
  • Connect devices to timers so they can power on and off automatically
  • Transition equipment to sleep or standby mode if it can’t be fully turned off

PICTURE IT GREENER

September 22, 2022 studio taping of Because News featuring Miguel Rivas, Jan Caruana, Brandon Ash-Mohammed, and host Gavin Crawford.

If you’ve had the pleasure of attending a taping of CBC Radio’s Because News, you’ve experienced a production that is going above and beyond to prioritize sustainability. Radio shows already have a relatively low carbon footprint, but that hasn’t stopped Executive Producer, Elizabeth Bowie, and her team from implementing green measures like providing reusable seat signage, awarding audience members with paper-based swag, and repurposing (the very few) printed scripts for note paper before ultimately recycling them. They also choose snacks with minimal packaging and serve them in reusable baskets. And there's not a single plastic water bottle to be seen – the crew brings in their own thermoses and water bottles to cut back on waste. Very impressive!

What’s your production doing to curb its carbon footprint? Send a note to
leaticia.kaggwa@cbc.ca and you could be featured in the next issue of Seeds of Change.
