You can always make changes

"Don't hesitate and ruminate over the logic of your lines or else it'll prevent you from moving forward. Just keep writing, even if you think it's bad.

"There will always be a chance for you to return to make changes. Be honest and unabashed and make it intimate in your own way."

Mary Zhu was on the 2023 CBC Poetry Prize longlist. She has a few poems published in The Literary Canteen, Ricepaper Magazine and Prism International. She is slowly but surely working on a poetry book while juggling her day job in an academic library.

The 2024 CBC Poetry Prize is now open!

You could win $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts, attend a two-week writing residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and have your work published on CBC Books. The deadline to enter is Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 4:59 p.m. ET.
