NXNW Apr. 19, 2025

Welcome to the NXNW newsletter! Wishing you an excellent Easter long weekend. This Saturday, poet Sheri-D Wilson brings us the second instalment of her epic trilogy in verse, Christine May gives us a tour of the Kelowna Art Gallery's Her Land exhibit, and Chelene Knight discusses "author care" in her new guided journal for writers.

On April 20, CBC's Sonali Karnick will join you for Best of the Weekend, a special program celebrating some of the most engaging conversations from across the country. North by Northwest will return for our regularly scheduled programming next week.

Saturday

In the latest entry in our poetry series, acclaimed writer and Order of Canada appointee Sheri-D Wilson reads from the pages of The Oneironaut 02, the second volume in her trilogy of dystopian fantasy poetry.

Vancouver writer Meredith Hambrock chats about the satire, suspense and patriarchy in her new novel She's A Lamb!, a darkly comic tale that follows a struggling actress and her delusional ambition to lead in a production of The Sound of Music.

Curator Christine May showcases nine women who made an impact on the environmental art movement with Her Land: Perspectives in Eco-Art, a multimedia exhibit running at the Kelowna Art Gallery until May 11.

Award-winning author Chelene Knight explains how we can centre ourselves creatively with her new book Safekeeping: A Writer's Guided Journal for Launching a Book with Love, which she's bringing to the North Shore Writer's Festival on April 26.

Her Land: Perspectives in Eco-Art

Listeners may remember when NXNW was broadcast from CBC's Kelowna studio back in mid-March. While she was in town, NXNW's Margaret Gallagher visited the Kelowna Art Gallery, where curator Christine May provided a tour of the exhibit Her Land: Perspectives in Eco-Art. The multimedia exhibit celebrates the contributions of women in the environmental art movement, weaving themes of activism and Indigenous land rights with the work of nine Canadian artists.

Her Land: Perspectives in Eco-Art runs at the Kelowna Art Gallery until May 11.

Launching a book with love

How do storytellers new and old deal with impostor syndrome, burnout and the comparison trap? Award-winning Vancouver author Chelene Knight joins us to preview the exercises, prompts and teaching found in her new book Safekeeping: A Writer's Guided Journal for Launching a Book with Love. Released by House of Anansi Press in January, Knight says she feels the book's guidance is applicable to anyone, whether they are a writer or not.

Chelene Knight and NXNW's Margaret Gallagher will also discuss Safekeeping, "author care" and more at the upcoming North Shore Writers Festival. That conversation will take place at the Lynn Valley Library on April 26 from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. PT.

In case you missed it...

Last week on NXNW, award-winning author Paul Yee spoke with us about his new children's book The Three Sisters. On April 19, Yee will host a live reading at Vancouver's Chinatown Storytelling Centre, accompanied by a performance of the UBC Chinese Music Ensemble.
