P.W. Bridgman's The World You Now Own, Poetry of the Year with Aislinn Hunter, and Michael Burnyeat's 366 Days of Fiddle Tunes

Happy New Year, and welcome to the NXNW newsletter! Margaret Gallagher is back with you for our first show of 2025, and we've got a lot of great conversations worth celebrating. This weekend, P.W. Bridgman shares pieces from his fifth and latest book, Aislinn Hunter goes through her curated anthology of the best Canadian poetry of the year, and Michael Burnyeat tells us about his New Year's resolution involving 366 days of fiddle tunes.

Looking to improve your diet this year? Nutritionist Tamara Green joins us with some advice from her cookbook Good Food, Good Mood: 100 Nourishing Recipes to Support Mind and Body Wellness, co-authored with Sarah Grossman. 

P.W. Bridgman gives us a preview of The World You Now Own. His fifth book is comprised of new poetry and a novella in verse, which tells the story of a chance encounter between two strangers on an eastbound train going from Vancouver to Toronto in 1961.

We'll meet people working with hot sauces, chili peppers and more as we kick off our January "Hot Stuff" series. This week, Jacob Hetsler tells us about how he showcases traditional plant medicines as the Anishinaabe owner and founder of Cedar Hot Sauce in Vancouver. 

Award-winning fiddler Michael Burnyeat explains why he went all the way with 366 Days of Fiddle Tunes, his New Year's resolution to record and upload a new fiddle tune for every day of 2024.

Sportscaster and journalist Jim Lang shares some of the uplifting stories and unlikely heroes found in his newest book, Everyday Hockey Heroes, Volume III, More Uplifting Stories Celebrating Our Great Game.

Danny Ramadan's Crooked Teeth: A Queer Syrian Refugee Memoir was listed as one of Audible's best audiobooks of 2024 and was also named as a finalist for the 2024 Governor General's Literary Awards late last year. We'll revisit our conversation with Ramadan when the book is released in May 2024. 

The concept of "Dry January" dates as far back as the 1940s. Freelance writer and reporter Jordan Kawchuk is here to examine the difference between "going dry" and "going sober" in order to truly understand one's relationship with alcohol.

366 Days of Fiddle Tunes with Michael Burnyeat

 

When you make a New Year's resolution, how much do you commit to it? This next story might give you some inspiration. For 2024, award-winning musician Michael Burnyeat took it upon himself to record and upload a new fiddle tune - every day - for 366 days. We'll hear Michael talk about some of his favourite fiddle tunes, why he took on this project, and how he stuck with it for an entire year.

Best Canadian Poetry with Aislinn Hunter

 

Award-winning writer Aislinn Hunter joins us to discuss her work as guest editor of Best Canadian Poetry 2025 - a curated anthology of the best Canadian poetry writing published in 2023. Aislinn explains what it took to narrow the selection down to 50 poems, including works by a dozen B.C. poets.
