Before it screens at the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival (Nov. 23), Kevin Cheng previews his short film Astronaut, which follows a young Chinese-Canadian boy on a cosmic journey to connect with his absent father.

Women Carvers on the Northwest Coast

 

Co-curated by Dana Claxton and Curtis Collins, Curve! Women Carvers on the Northwest Coast is a new Audain Art Museum exhibit that highlights women's contributions to Northwest Coast carving art. We'll hear Dana Claxton tour through the exhibit, which features a total of 130 pieces, including masks, poles, panels and sculptures. 

Curve! Women Carvers on the Northwest Coast runs at the Audain Art Museum until May 5, 2025.

Heavy Metals - DICED Knives

 

This week on our November "Heavy Metals" series, NXNW's Margaret Gallagher visits the DICED Knives workshop to speak with co-founders Don Guthro and Riley Janzen. We'll hear them discuss the process of crafting knives and how they're expanding the business with a holiday pop-up on Granville Island next week.

B.C. On Screen - The Big Score 

 

B.C. On Screen is our monthly film column from NXNW's Jeremy Ratt, where he puts a spotlight on the many production roles and people of the province's film industry. This week, Jeremy visited the studio of Rich Walters, who's worked as a composer and supervising music editor for more than 25 years — including credits in films and TV shows such as Elysium, Drinkwater, Nobody, and Invincible.

Last week on NXNW, playwright Justin Neal joined us to talk about Keepers of the Salish Sea, a Holy Crow Arts production about a middle-aged man rediscovering himself and his Coast Salish roots through a canoe journey.

Keepers of the Salish Sea opened on Nov. 21 and runs until Dec. 1 at The Cultch’s Historic Theatre in Vancouver.
