Eastside Culture Crawl Artist Spotlight: Serena Chu

Serena Chu is a multi-disciplinary artist, teacher, as well as the owner of Chu Chu Ceramics and Chu Chu Colouring. As part of the Eastside Culture Crawl running this weekend, Serena is welcoming visitors to her Pandora Street studio — a tour of which she gave Margaret.

Hurricane Mona premieres at The Cultch

Touchstone Theatre's Hurricane Mona is a climate change comedy that follows an upper-middle class family in the centre of a climate emergency. Playwright Pippa Mackie drew partly on her own experiences as young climate change activist to write the absurdist cautionary tale, which features a talking frog as one of the characters. Margaret met up with Pippa at The Cultch for a preview of the play, which runs from Nov. 18 - Dec. 3.

Playwright Pippa Mackie's play was partly inspired by her own experiences.

Sahabhava: A Community Showcase of Indian Classical Music and Dance

Sahabhava is a Sanskrit word for community and co-existence. The show opens Nov. 25 at The Sanctuary of Vancouver Unitarians, and is presented by the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver. Nina Buddhdev works with the society, and is a longtime arts presenter, consultant and mentor through her organization, The Bandish Network. Nina joined us in studio earlier this week to talk about the festival's importance, her arts journey and that of her son, Hriday Buddhdev — one of the performers taking stage at Sahabhava.

Hot Drinks - Yuan Coffee

NXNW story producer Jeremy Ratt continues our November Hot Drinks series with a visit to Yuan Coffee in East Vancouver. Coffee lover Tim Tsai opened the shop six weeks ago, which showcases coffee from East Asia. We'll hear about Tim's story, the art of making coffee, and his love for caramel macchiatos with the extra drizzle on top.

  • 40 Men and 12 Rifles by Marcelino Truong (translated from French by David Homel, Arsenal Pulp Press, 2023)
  • The Naked Tree by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim (translated from Korean by Janet Hong, Drawn & Quarterly, 2023)

In case you missed it...an opera double

Celebrated mezzo-soprano and Saturday Afternoon at the Opera host Marion Newman joined us in studio last week. She appears in the Vancouver Opera production of Sanctuary & Storm, running Nov. 17-19.

Listen to our interview with Marion via CBC Listen.

Vancouver composer Rita Ueda joined us in the NXNW studio to talk about the world premiere of I Have My Mother's Eyes: A Holocaust Memoir Across Generations. The chamber opera is inspired by the story of two families bonded by Second World War events. It's at the Chutzpah Festival running Nov. 18-19.

Read more about it here.
