I Have My Mother's Eyes, Life at the Lake, and Record Keeping with Marion Newman

NXNW Nov. 11-12, 2023

Happy Friday! Clocks have fallen back for most of B.C. The mornings are darker, but rest assured, we have a very bright show lined up for you this Remembrance Day weekend. We'll spotlight artisans, a new chamber opera, and we'll spin another great edition of Record Keeping.

Looking for something from a previous show? Be sure to check out our archive, or stop by our CBC Listen page.

Coming up on the show this weekend:

Composer Rita Ueda takes inspiration from a Second World War memoir in her chamber opera, I Have My Mother's Eyes: A Holocaust Memoir Across Generations.

Kwagiulth and Stó:lō mezzo-soprano Marian Newman joins us for some Record Keeping.

Robert Amos chronicles another life chapter of celebrated Vancouver Island artist, E.J. Hughes, in his latest book, E.J. Hughes: Life at the Lake — while reflecting on Hughes' work as a Canadian war artist during the Second World War.

Tadros Eyob and Leroy Hirkala Maarhuis explore rock climbing and building diverse commununies in their new documentary, Kid Rock.

Ed and Natasha Tatton of Whistler's popular Bred bakery share the joys of vegan baking in their new cookbook, Bred: Sourdough Loaves, Small Bread, and Other Plant-Based Baking.

Circle Craft Holiday Market runs this weekend, and NXNW's Jeremy Ratt tours us through local artisans' work.
Chai Ghai owner Sunil Ghai celebrates Diwali and the magic of family recipes in his new Vancouver cafe.

I Have My Mother's Eyes: A Holocaust Memoir Across Generations

Vancouver composer Rita Ueda joins the NXNW studio to talk about I Have My Mother's Eyes: A Holocaust Memoir Across Generations — a chamber opera inspired by the story of two families bonded by Second World War events. It's premiering on Gabriola Island on Nov. 11-12, and will show at the Norman Rothstein Theatre in Vancouver on Nov. 18-19 as part of the Chutzpah Festival.

Kid Rock premieres at Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival

Tadros Eyob and Leroy Hirkala-Maarhuis join us to talk about their new film, Kid Rock, which follows Tadros and his journey into B.C. rock climbing. The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival runs in-person in Vancouver on Nov. 14-19, and online from Nov. 14 to Dec. 10.

Hot drinks: Chai Ghai on Granville Street

In this week's November Hot Drinks series, NXNW's Margaret Gallagher visited Chai Ghai on Granville Street to speak with owner Sunil Ghai, who founded the business to honour his grandmother's family recipes. What started online is now also a chai lounge in downtown Vancouver.

Touring the Circle Craft Holiday Market

For nearly 50 years, the Circle Craft Holiday Market has been a Vancouver staple for local artisans showcasing their work. It runs from Nov. 8-12, and earlier this week story producer Jeremy Ratt dropped by to chat with a few of the artisans and folks at Circle Craft Co-op.

You'll hear from guests such as:
  • Anna Brancati of Circle Craft Co-op
  • Dayna Konopelny of Emilka Kono
  • Adea Chung of Billy Would Designs
  • Potter Gordon Hutchens
  • Wendy Van Riesen of Dahlia Drive
  • Woodworker Jorge Izaza
  • Tanya Droege of Sealuxe, Circle Craft Co-op

Record Keeping with Marion Newman

Celebrated mezzo-soprano and Saturday Afternoon at the Opera host Marion Newman is in town to perform at the Vancouver Opera production of Sanctuary & Storm, running Nov. 17-19. Before that, she joins us for some Record Keeping.

Here's what Marian has spinning:

A song from your youth?
Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

A song, artist, or album you keep coming back to?
Rückert Lieders by Gustav Mahler  any of the five tracks!

Something you're listening to right now?
Taimangalimaaq (Time After Time) by Elisapie.
