Freedom to Read Week is a week-long Canadian event that celebrates freedom to read and "encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom."
 
The 2023 edition is taking place Feb. 19-25, 2023.

Zimbabwe's Petina Gappah casts new light on David Livingstone's search for the source of the Nile

When Petina Gappah was a child, she read a story about the 19th-century explorer, missionary and doctor David Livingstone and his famous (and failed) search for the source of the Nile River. 

 

Now the acclaimed Zimbabwean novelist and short story writer has reimagined Livingstone in her own book, Out of Darkness, Shining Light.

 

Gappah spoke to Eleanor Wachtel for the latest episode of Writers & Company.

Rapper Rollie Pemberton reveals what it takes to survive the music industry in his memoir Bedroom Rapper

Rollie Pemberton, best known by his stage name Cadence Weapon, won the 2021 Polaris Prize for his album Parallel World. Pemberton is also an activist, the former poet laureate of Edmonton and a writer, whose work has appeared in Pitchfork, The Guardian and Hazlitt. 

 

But, as his memoir, titled Bedroom Rapper, reveals, life as a musician hasn't been all awards, titles and recognition. Pemberton spoke about his life, work and book with Shelagh Rogers on The Next Chapter.

 

This woman brought more books by Black authors to her local library

Renée Kokonya Sullivan noticed there was a lack of books by Black authors at her local library a couple years ago and helped add to the collection.
