Hi, Art!

Sunday, January 19, 2025

Hi, art lovers!

People walking on a city street at daytime pass a car that has seemingly been smashed by a '60s era space satellite.

(Stéphane Bourgeois)

Before the weekend, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the TikTok ban, and wouldn’t you know it, one of the most bizarre stories we ran this past week started on the app: the tale of a Canadian art installation that inspired a flurry of #fakenews about space junk. (Find that article after the jump.)

While we were reporting on Canadian satellites (that didn’t actually go) crashing to Earth, the folks at Q were talking to homegrown stars. Listen to feature interviews with The Last Showgirl’s Pamela Anderson and American Primeval’s Taylor Kitsch. Also on the program: a chat with Paul Gross and Martha Burns, who star in a new production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (We have a story about that show, too. Skip to “You’ve got to see this” to read all about it.)

Because we promised you eye candy ...

Colourful semi-abstract landscape art made of strips of cut paper, similar to a pinata. It hangs on a white wall, casting shadows.

Artwork: Justin Favela; Photo: Toni Hafkenscheid/Art Gallery of Guelph

Note to self: plan a road trip to the Art Gallery of Guelph to see Entrelazados by Guatemalan Mexican American artist Justin Favela. The show is on through May 4 and includes more paper works like this one: Valle de México Tomado en las Cimas de Tepeyac, After José María Velasco I.

Painting in a surreal style. Depicts a kidney shaped pool. Patterned walls cast their reflection in the blue pool. A pair of tall white boots rests on a red patterned plinths. Flower-like forms spring from the top of the boots.

Georgina Lee Walker

Gladstone House in Toronto will be featuring a slate of new art exhibitions Jan. 27 to 31 as part of the DesignTO Festival. This painting by Georgina Lee Walker (Playing Dress Up by the Pool) is one of the works on display.

Abstract painting. A tangle of veiny tubes, some with fingers.

You've got to see this

A grey Nissan sedan is parked on a city street at daytime. Its hood appears to have been smashed by a '60s era space satellite, which rests on its crumpled surface.

Canadian satellite smashes car in downtown Boston?!

Calm down, TikTok. It’s just art by a Hamilton sculptor. See why Brandon Vickerd’s Alouette is having a huge impact online.

Still from Wights. A woman and man stand across from each other, divided by a kitchen table. They are performing on a darkened stage.
Dahlia Katz

What’s scarier than a play about boozed-up brainiacs? Two of them

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and a new social satire, Wights, are now on stage in Toronto.

Still from the play Talk Sexxxy. A woman wearing jeans and a brown sweater lies on a bare mattress on the floor, surrounded by dirty clothes and junk.

Lee-Anne Poole

Psst, wanna hear a secret?

For her new show, Talk Sexxxy, Lee-Anne Poole is in confessional mode. Based on her experience working as a phone-sex operator, it’s playing to sold-out crowds in Halifax.
