Hi, art lovers! | | | Mark Eydelshteyn and Mikey Madison star in Anora. (Neon) | | Canadian winter isn’t the only season that essentially lasts a full six months. There’s also awards season, and for showbiz obsessives, the Oscar race is the most wonderful time of year. The stars won’t be taking home any little gold men until 2025, of course. (The Academy Awards are handed out March 2.) But until then, our resident cinephile, CBC Arts producer Peter Knegt, will be filing a monthly column devoted to the year’s top contenders. Oscar predictions already? You bet. The nominations won’t be announced until Jan. 17, but in Hollywood, the circus of speculation has already begun, and for those hoping to fund a spring break getaway by winning the office Oscar pool, Peter will be updating this page with his latest predictions. A bunch of the early front-runners have appeared on Q over the last several months. Listen to interviews with Dune: Part Two's Denis Villeneuve, Conclave's Isabella Rossellini and Anora director Sean Baker. The latter film, which was a recent hot topic on Commotion, stars Mikey Madison, a favourite in the best actress category. (She also dropped by Q to discuss the role.) | | | | Because we promised you eye candy ... | | | | | LF Documentation/Stephanie Comilang/Daniel Faria Gallery | For this week’s batch of eye candy, I’m taking us to Miami Beach … and saving us the trouble of actually going to Florida. Miami Art Week starts tomorrow, and several Canadian galleries will be there for all the fairs and shows and hubbub. Art Basel is the biggest attraction of them all, and the Daniel Faria Gallery will be bringing this 2024 work by Stephanie Comilang (Akoya) to its booth. As it happens, Stephanie has a solo exhibition at the Toronto-based gallery right now. Bouquets for Paradise is there through Dec. 14. | | | | | Ben Gould/Pangée | More from NADA Miami! Occlusion Electrodes by American artist Ben Gould. Montreal gallery Pangée will be showing a variety of his works plus paintings by Victoria-based painter Darby Milbrath. | | | | | Michael Thompson | This is just a small (but arresting!) detail of Coursing, a 2024 painting by Michael Thompson. The piece will be at NADA Miami as well — brought there by Toronto gallery Franz Kaka. | | | | | William Sabourin/Marlon Kroll/Galerie Eli Kerr | Montreal’s Galerie Eli Kerr will be at NADA Miami too. This is one of the artworks they’ll be bringing with them: Breathwork by Marlon Kroll. | | | | | Universal Pictures/Associated Press | | | All the hype around Wicked is a force “For Good,” and according to Anne T. Donahue, few things in life can match the sheer joy of a shared cultural moment. | | | | | MGM | | | These are some of Peter Knegt’s favourite film performances of the year. But will they get any love from Hollywood? | | | | | Amanda Matlovich/Netflix | | | | Starring Colman Domingo, this paranoid political thriller is inspired by the extreme division of our times. | | | | Justin Jasmins | Briony is an influencer, photographer and visual artist, and she’s carved herself a niche making larger-than-life sculptures for brands. One of those eye-popping projects is The Inaugural Six, a giant goalie helmet, which is her salute to the PWHL. She told us all about it last week. | | | | Share this newsletter | | or subscribe if this was forwarded to you. | | | | | Got questions? Typo catches? Story ideas? | | We're just an email away.
