Hi, art lovers! | | | CBC Gem | | Something new for your streaming queue! After airing last night on CBC, the Stratford Festival’s Richard III is now on CBC Gem. It’s the same production that appeared at the festival last summer — the first show to appear onstage at Stratford’s newly reopened Tom Patterson Theatre, a space that recently underwent a $72-million transformation. And Colm Feore stars as the tyrant king, a role he kept rehearsing through all the COVID closures.
The New York Times was a fan of his performance, calling him “superb, in a very cool and traditional reading of the role.” As for the play, if you skipped it in high school English class, the Shakespeare classic is a must-watch for any casual fan of Succession, although the Kendall Roy factor is just one small reason why the show remains relevant. On that point, I’d recommend this episode of CBC Radio’s Ideas. Have a listen before you start the play on CBC Gem, and discover Richard III’s timely themes of “complicity, conscience and speaking truth to power.” The episode even checks in with some of Richard III’s Stratford stars: Feore and Jessica B. Hill, who plays Lady Anne. | | | | And because we promised you eye candy ... | | | | | Cardiff Miller Art Warehouse | | | Artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, who repped Canada at the 2001 Venice Biennale, have transformed a furniture warehouse in the North Okanagan into a permanent home for their art.
