Hi, Art!

Sunday, September 25, 2022

Hi, art lovers!

When TIFF is through, awards season begins. And while there was plenty of premature Oscar chatter on the site last week, another star-studded event is coming to CBC tonight. Airing on TV and CBC Gem, the Legacy Awards will be brought to you live from Toronto, where actors (and Scarborough-raised siblings!) Stephan James and Shamier Anderson will be hosting 90 glam minutes from History, one of the city’s newest venues.

You probably know Stephan from Hollywood turns in If Beale Street Could Talk and the Apple TV+ series Surface. And Shamier is the star of an Apple TV+ program of his own (Invasion). On top of hosting the night’s festivities, the duo shares credit for not just creating the awards, but also the organization behind it, the Black Academy.

Canada’s never had a nationally televised awards show that’s dedicated exclusively to Black talent. Folks working at the top of their fields — Black artists, athletes, digital creators and more — will be honoured throughout the night. There’ll be performances too. (Watch for Jully Black, Deborah Cox, Kardinal Offishall.)

It’ll be interesting to see how it all matches up with the vision Stephan and Shamier described when they announced the project last summer. They spoke with CBC Arts and Q at the time, and both interviews touch on the big ideas that led to the creation of the Black Academy and its mission to dismantle systemic racism in the Canadian film industry and beyond. (How does Canada fail its Black filmmakers? This CBC News story explores that topic.)

It all starts at 8 p.m. ET. More tune-in details over here.

And because we promised you eye candy ...

Photo of a detail of an art installation made of wooden picnic tables connected together in infinite tangled loops that encircle concrete towers.

The Bentway

Who says picnic season is over? Here’s a sneak peek at Confluence, an installation that’ll be appearing at the Bentway very soon. If you don’t catch it at Nuit Blanche, it’ll be up through Oct. 30.

Collaged image of a woman's gown on a dress form filled with image of a city skyscraper. The dress form is against a reflective curtain backdrop. The image appears to be flat but is indeed a photo of a woven tapestry hanging on a white wall.

Shannon Bool

What if I told you this is a tapestry? It’s by Shannon Bool and it’s appearing at Daniel Faria Gallery in Toronto … a spot that happens to be part of Gallery Weekend Toronto’s Wallace/Dundas route. (More on that event in the “You’ve got to see this” section below.)

Lina Wu

There’s so much happening in Toronto right now! If you haven’t already seen these plastered all over the city, here’s yet another reminder that Zine Dream is on at MOCA this weekend. Lisa Wu is the artist who designed this year’s poster.

Graphic illustration with precise symmetry depicting an orange cat in the window of an ornate building.

Nolan Pelletier

You’ll find Nolan Pelletier at Zine Dream too. (Check out the fair’s exhibitor list and plan your shopping accordingly.)

Sculptural glass artwork made of jadeite vintage glass.

Amber Cowan

I suddenly feel the urge to spend the rest of the day antiquing. Glass art (made with found objects!) by Amber Cowan.

What’s your favourite season?

If you’re Moira Rose (or CBC Arts producer Peter Knegt), the correct answer is “awards,” and this year’s race is officially underway. Peter’s writing a new column (My Favourite Season) where he’ll ponder “all things awards” and the question that’s launched office gambling pools the whole world over: who’s going to make it to the Oscars?

JFL Toronto returns with something new: a three-day block party

Best of all, the shows are totally free. Craig Robinson and the Nasty Delicious headline tonight.

Spend a Gallery Weekend in Toronto and see art in a whole new way

More than two dozen galleries across the city have extended their hours and developed special programming. Today’s your last chance to experience the event.

Pandemic feels that are made out of felt! Maria has an exhibition at Patel Brown Gallery in Toronto right now and she recently talked about it with CBC Arts. Find bits of that conversation in the Gallery Weekend story that’s linked above.
