Hi, Art!

Friday, April 08, 2022

Hi, art lovers!

What are you doing tonight? As of 8 p.m. ET, the Canadian Screen Awards will be airing live just about everywhere you can get your eyeballs on CBC.

Us? We’ve had a pretty eventful Canadian Screen Week already, what with all the pre-gala awards that were announced the last few days. Amanda Parris won a CSA for hosting CBC Arts: Exhibitionists! 21 Black Futures was celebrated too. (Best web program or series, fiction! Woot woot!)

If you’re reading this, you’ve got to be familiar with all that (award-winning!) CBC Arts content already. So if you’re in the mood to watch some CSA-nominated fare, maybe seek out something new to you. The Canadian Academy has a curated list of where to stream movies and TV shows that are nominated this year. Heads up: not everything’s free, but you’re bound to discover something.

Random things that were new to me this week? Spotifictional (a streaming service that doubles as an excuse to revisit the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack). I bet your camera roll contains a masterpiece, but even so, here’s the best way to clean it out. Did you know the average smartphone can take 275,000 photos before forced obsolescence kicks in? I learned that infuriating bit of trivia from this installation at Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum. But then, why take photos when there’s an AI that can do this?

And because we promised you eye candy ...

Aïda Muluneh

The Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival returns to Toronto later this spring, but you can already browse a lot of the program online. Among the highlights? Work by Aïda Muluneh. She has an exhibition at the Textile Museum of Canada April 27 to Sept. 25.

I checked in with Calgary’s Simone Elizabeth Saunders earlier this week while working on a story, and oh my goodness, her work just keeps getting more and more gorgeous.
