Hi, Art!

Sunday, December 26, 2021

Hi, art lovers!

The situation is going to be a little different depending on where you’re reading this, but I suspect that Omicron’s got you facing another quiet New Year’s Eve at home, contemplating which live-streamed countdown you’ll be watching dead-eyed from afar. Will it be Toronto? Calgary? London? New York? Everywhere in between? So as we hurtle toward 2022, here are a couple of streaming entertainment options from the CBC universe — a couple of items that didn’t make it into last week’s dispatch. Podcast Playlist curated a few episodes that’ll make for a super hygge evening, and CBC News movie critic Eli Glasner would probably suggest you stream and/or rent a few of these.

And because we promised you eye candy ...

Painting of two pale hands stretched towards either in a diagonal line. The backdrop is a dense floral pattern in shades of indigo and violet that has been speckled with white dots suggesting a night sky. At the centre of the frame is a glowing white orb . The hand at top right appears to emerge from a wobbly portal.

Painting of a night sky, framed by tall trees cast in complete shadow. At the bottom centre, a post with a globe-shaped lamp glows with amber light. A crescent moon, waxing from the bottom of the orb, hangs at the top of the frame.

Airbrush-style illustration of a kitchen-sink drain. Three transparent sheets appear to circle the drain, which sparkles with cartoon stars, like ghosts. The image is rendered in shades of grey.

And just like that, another pandemic year goes down the drain. Art by Montreal’s Trevor Yardley-Jones.

Maybe 2021 wasn’t so bad?

Illustration of a woman in profile. She tilts her head back and looks upwards with a blank expression. Long dark hair falls down her back. The backdrop is a stylized sun with rays that stretch to the edges of the frame. The picture is rendered in shades of tan, black and white.
