Hi, Art!

Sunday, November 28, 2021

Hi, art lovers!

It’s not even noon, and I suspect you’ve already deleted a dozen Cyber Monday emails. ‘Tis the season to shop after all, which is why you’ll find a link to our annual gift guide in the top featured spot this week. As per tradition, everything on that wish list was made by someone who’s been featured on CBC Arts. Remember those As Seen On TV stores that used to be in every mall? Think of it like that. Except it’s not a store full of ShamWows, it’s just a list of artist-made stuff that you can buy online.

Actually, depending on where you live, some of our gift guide goodies can be shopped in person at holiday craft markets around the country. There are more happening in the next few weeks than I can possibly keep track of. (What’s the must-visit maker fair where you live? Seriously. Tell me!) But I’ve definitely been browsing from afar, which made this next bit of the newsletter extra easy to compile …

And because we promised you eye candy ...

Print. Visible are a set of human legs and arms pointing at a book resting in tall grass.

Penrose Press

Bibliophile Brianna Tosswill has so many lovely linocuts available through her website (Penrose Press), and the artist is also at Edmonton’s Royal Bison Art & Craft Fair this season. Their online marketplace is now in business (shop through Dec. 12) and they’ll be throwing in-person events too (Dec. 3 to 5 and 10 to 12).

Another artist at Royal Bison: Jill Harrison, aka Lucky Bear. (Psst! Calgary, she’ll be selling at Market Collective’s Holiday Series in December.)

See You Soon Studio (aka artist Nicole Jang) will have wall hangings like this beauty at the Toque Craft Fair Dec. 1 to 5. That event’s happening online, actually, and it doubles as a fundraiser for Western Front, an artist-run centre in Vancouver.

Photo of 10 press-on fingernails on a white background. They are painted with multicolour cartoon designs.

@fingernails.are.pretty/Instagram

Um, hand-painted press-on nails — that are based on Winnipeg murals? There are some things you don’t realize you want until you see them. (If you’re in Toronto, you can find Fingernails are Pretty at the One Of A Kind Show through Dec. 5.)

Photo of a print by Stephanie Cheng on a blush pink background. The print depicts a nude Black woman with long wavy hair surrounded by pink clouds. Three cranes fly overhead.

Stephanie Cheng

Stephanie Cheng has hauled a selection of her dreamy screen prints down to OOAK too.

Photo of a person holding a large printed furoshiki cloth in front of their face. The person wears all white and stands against an ecru backdrop. The sheet features a pink floral illustration on white.

Anita Cheung

The Polygon Gallery in Vancouver is running its Little Mountain Shop Holiday Pop-up through Dec. 26. Artist Anita Cheung is one of the vendors. (She’s also selling this furoshiki through her online shop.)

Photo of irregularly shaped ceramic vessels. They are glazed in glossy shades of blue and illustrated with abstracted florals. They rest on a black-and-white striped backdrop.

@viviansofiadesigns/Instagram

More treasures to be found in Vancouver! Vivian-Sofia Mora is at Got Craft? The virtual version of the fair ends today, but they’ll be doing an in-person event Dec. 18 and 19.

Resin jewelry has become a staple at craft sales, but I’ve never come across anything cuter than these pins by Tegan Thomas. She’s at the Halifax Crafters Society Winter Market Dec. 3 to 5.

Photo of a human hand holding up a print of two hands holding ferns. Backdrop is shelf of printmakers' tools.

@kaori_izumiya_art/Instagram

I don’t think I could drag myself away from Puces Pop without spending a month’s salary on prints. The market returns to Montreal for two weekends in December. Find Kaori Izumiya there Dec. 10 to 12.

Hiné was our featured logo artist back in September, but I strongly suspect December’s her all-time favourite month. Her Etsy shop is stuffed with adorable holiday prints and I fa-la-la-la-LOVE them all.
