Halifax photographer captures triumphs and heartbreak of life in Black community

A Halifax photographer with an eye for social realism and the experience of his Black family and community has a new exhibit on display at the Dalhousie Art Gallery.

Allen D. Crooks's collection is titled Family Matters, and is part of As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic, a travelling exhibition by Black photographers of Black subjects.

Emma Logan, now 26, lost her hearing at 13 months due to meningitis. She's been curling since she was 11. An elite player, she represented Nova Scotia at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2020 and 2021.

Emily Johnson works full-time with her dad's construction business, she's an artist who specializes in beading, and on the side, she's a doula for expectant parents at Sitansisk, also known as St. Mary's First Nation. Now, the 24-year-old has added another title to her list — published children's book author and illustrator.

Students and teachers in Prince Edward Island now have access to a new curriculum focused on the history of Black women in the province. The material was developed as part of the Black Women's History Project and includes three lesson plans for Grade 8 social studies classes.

After decades-long push, P.E.I. now offers midwifery to oversee pregnancies

After decades of proponents calling for the service, Health P.E.I. has hired its first two midwives to provide care both before and after new births on the Island. The midwives began working at Charlottetown's Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Jan. 30, and can offer care prior to birth and for up to eight weeks afterward.

Andy Warhol or Marcus Gosse? Combining pop art and Mi'kmaw tradition

A Mi'kmaw artist is blending traditional Newfoundland and Labrador culture with the iconic work of Andy Warhol — and his collection of paintings has been seen around the globe. The collection started in 2009 when Marcus Gosse watched a PBS documentary about Warhol.

Janine Lightfoot was shocked when she picked up the phone and found out she had been named the Inuk Woman of the Year by Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada.

"It's like my brain glitched," Lightfoot said. "I couldn't download what she was actually saying and I was just a little bit stunned."
