One of the most common questions I am asked as co-host of The Fifth Estate is, “Where do you find your stories?” Many come from you, our viewers. This time last year, as Season 49 was wrapping up, we issued an appeal directly to viewers to send us stories you felt weren’t getting attention due to the decline of local media across the country. We were overwhelmed with the response. "Dawson Creek: We Want Our Town Back" was a plea for help by residents in a town in northeastern B.C., overwhelmed by a wave of killings and disappearances. "The Shadow War On Libraries" tells the story of Valleyview, Alta., a town divided by a battle over the future of its public library — a battle being used to target books that have 2SLGBTQ+ themes and characters. Both stories prompted widespread community response, pressure on local governments to deal with citizens’ concerns, and finally, answers to demands for accountability. And in both cases, the fallout continues. That’s the aim of all our stories at The Fifth Estate: impact. So, as Season 50 comes to an end, we’ll repeat our callout. If there are stories that are not getting the coverage they deserve because you live in a so-called “news desert,” send us your tips to fifthtips@cbc.ca. Our new episodes begin streaming in October. Until then, we will be featuring stories from the vaults of The Fifth Estate on our YouTube channel — a different episode will be released every week. It's our commitment to keep you involved in our journalism — work we couldn't do without your help. As always, we are here to investigate for you. Mark Kelley, Co-host, The Fifth Estate |
